On March 10, the hotel "Radisson" "Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy" (NIMD), "the International Election Fund" (IFES) and the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (OSCE / ODIHR) organized a roundtable - Women's Participation in Political Life was held.
During the meeting parties discussed women’s participation during the recent election, as well as strategies and plans to promote women's participation in political processes and local election.
The representative of IFES- Norman Nishich noted that Georgia has done a lot of research which shows that women's participation in politics is very low. According to him, the event aims to raise the awareness about this specific problem, which will help Georgian women to become more actively involved in politics generally.
The importance of Women's involvement in politics was discussed by the acting US Ambassador in Georgia Bridget Brink. According to him, the event is dedicated to the discussion of a variety of ways, which may increase women's participation in political life, as he said; this issue is particularly relevant to scheduled June local elections.
Parliament vice-speaker Manana Kobakhidze, who at the same time, the Chairperson of Gender Equality Council, spoke about the changes, according which the party, that takes into account the proportional list of every ten women, will be supplemented with 30% of basic. Manana Kobakhidze wished that the parties become more responsible for this issue. He also noted that a strong woman is a guarantee of a strong country.
The event was attended by representatives of the executive and legislative branches of government, the city council, the non-parliamentary opposition, international and local non-governmental organizations, including the representative from the Center for Development and Democracy.
