Georgia elected as a member of UN Human Rights Council

Georgia was elected as a member of the UN Human Rights Council at the plenary session of General Assembly with 177 votes for 2016-2018 term, which was held on October 28, 2015 in New York.

According to the assessment of the “Center for Development and Democracy” UNHRC membership is a significant step forward in terms of improving international standards of Human Rights, which in turn imposes more responsibility to Georgia. It is important for Georgia to effectively carry out not only the obligations towards UN, but also get closer to the international standards and use UN system to react on human rights violation and improve its overall situation. UNHRC membership is a new challenge for the country and human rights issues should be given a priority in the domestic and foreign politics.

UN Human Rights Council consists of 47 member states of the UN and its function is to ensure the protection of the universal human rights, reacting on human rights violations worldwide and give relevant recommendations.
