With the support of IFES a meeting of the Coalition “Georgian Dream”and the representative of non-governmental organizations was organized regarding the Reform of Electoral System issues at the Hotel “Tbilisi-Marriott”. The meeting was led by the Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia, Mr. David Usupashvili.
The meeting was attended by the representatives of legislative body, non-governmental organizations working on election issues and the coalition "Georgian dream". The meeting was attended by Ketevan Chachava, the Chairperson of the "Center for Development and Democracy".
The coalition "Georgian Dream" presented the model of majoritarian electoral districts division, which covered the scheme of division the 73 present electoral districts. Various procedural and technical issues were discussed, particularly: which districts need corrective actions, at the level of municipalities, which municipalities might be combined for the purpose of election districts, as well as introducing of 50% threshold in the majoritarian districts.
The "Center for Development and Democracy" presented its point of view regarding to the electoral reform as a document, which was distributed to the presenting audience. As it is known CDD is a member of the Committee of publishing the draft of the constitutional law and organizing its public discussions.
According to the Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia the discussion regarding to the electoral legislation will be continued in the future. Based on his evaluation the model presented by the working group is close to the international practice and to the decision of the Constitutional Court.
